Narrative Therapy
For New and Experienced Therapists

Paul Estenson, Ph.D.

Family therapy is now a time-honored and well-developed approach to clinical practice with individuals, couples, families, groups, and other systems. In recent years, systems therapists have been attracted to the newer approaches developed from social constructionist and narrative theories. This training program will focus on narrative approaches to thinking about and doing therapy. Narrative ideas challenge conventional therapeutic practice and our trainees have particularly enjoyed the respectful challenge narrative practice offers.

The training will be offered in one or two tracks depending upon interests and experience of the trainees. Whether there are one or two tracks, trainees can expect to achieve a good theoretical and practical understanding of the following:
  • social constructionist theory and the narrative therapies
  • establishing and maintaining collaborative therapeutic relationships
  • “story” as a metaphor for clinical practice
  • constructing workable stories of the problem
  • techniques of externalization
  • the use and formation of questions in therapy
  • narrative ideas about the therapist role: respect; being the expert; transparency
  • spirituality and meaning-making in therapy
  • use of reflecting teams in live supervision/consultation
Specific applications of concepts will depend upon the clinical interests of trainees.

FORMAT FOR BOTH TRACKS
  • Lecture, readings, discussion, live supervision using reflecting teams, experiential learning
  • Customized training options include individual supervision, group case consultation, family of origin groups, and consultation in your practice setting
WHEN: Beginning September 2008 and going through June 2009. Five hours, the third Friday afternoon of each month.

WHERE: Ann Arbor Center for the Family, Ann Arbor, Michigan

COST: $1,600 for nine months (10% discount if paid in total at start of training)
